Industrial Tank Coating & Lining Services in Arizona
MMI Tank & Industrial Services coats and lines steel storage tanks, pressure vessels, and industrial structures across Arizona and the western United States. We handle surface preparation, interior linings, exterior coating systems, and tank relining in the field, and we run a coating facility of nearly 6,000 square feet at our Phoenix fabrication plant for shop work. Because we also design, fabricate, erect, and repair tanks, one contractor owns the steel and the coating, with no hand-off between a tank builder and a painting subcontractor.
Tank Coating Services
- Interior tank linings: NSF/ANSI 61 certified epoxy linings for potable water and fire protection tanks, and chemical-resistant linings for process, wastewater, and industrial liquids.
- Exterior coating systems: zinc-rich primers with epoxy and polyurethane topcoats built for Arizona’s sun, heat, and dust.
- Tank relining and rehabilitation: removal of failed coatings, steel repair, and new lining systems, including fast-cure plural-component systems for tight outage windows.
- Surface preparation: abrasive blasting to SSPC standards, including SP-10 near-white metal for immersion service.
- Shop coating: new tanks, vessels, piping, and structural steel coated in our Phoenix facility, where temperature, humidity, and dust are controlled.
- Tank refurbishment and sanitizing: cleaning, inspection, repair, recoating, and disinfection to return water tanks to service.
- Concrete and structural steel coatings: secondary containment, floors, and steel structures at industrial facilities.
Coating Systems We Apply
| Service | Typical system | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Potable water and fire protection tanks | NSF/ANSI 61 epoxy lining | Required for drinking water contact; fire tanks are often tied to domestic water for makeup |
| Wastewater and corrosive service | High-build epoxy or polyurea lining | Resists H₂S, chemicals, and abrasion |
| Petroleum and chemical storage | Chemical-resistant epoxy lining; zinc-rich exterior primer | Matched to the product, concentration, and temperature |
| Tank exteriors in desert climates | Zinc-rich primer, epoxy intermediate, polyurethane topcoat | Corrosion protection plus UV and color stability |
| Fast return to service | Plural-component polyurea or fast-cure epoxy | Cures in hours, not days |
| High-temperature equipment | Silicone or ceramic-filled coatings | Continuous service above 300°F |
We apply products from Carboline, Tnemec, Sherwin-Williams, PPG, and Devoe, and select the system for the service conditions, not the brand. Our tank coating selection guide explains each system in detail.
Coating Tanks in Arizona Conditions
Arizona is hard on coatings, and it is hard on coating application. Summer steel temperatures can exceed the application limits for many products, low humidity and high heat shorten pot life and recoat windows, and intense UV breaks down exterior topcoats that are not built for it. We schedule field work around those limits, measure steel temperature, dew point, and film thickness at every coat, and specify UV-stable topcoats for exteriors. Most coating failures trace back to surface preparation and application conditions, not the product, which is why we treat both as part of the coating system.
Why Use a Tank Contractor for Tank Coatings
- One point of responsibility. The same company fabricates, erects, repairs, and coats the tank.
- Steel repair in the same mobilization. Pitting, thinned plate, and failed welds found during blasting are repaired by our ASME and National Board certified crews before the new lining goes on, without a second contractor. See API 653 tank repair.
- Code knowledge. We build tanks to AWWA D100, AWWA D103, API 650, and NFPA 22, so the coating scope matches what the governing standard and the owner’s inspector expect.
- Shop and field capability. New equipment is coated in our Phoenix shop; existing tanks are coated in place.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who provides industrial tank coating services in Arizona?
MMI Tank & Industrial Services, based in Phoenix, provides tank coating, lining, relining, and surface preparation across Arizona and the western United States, along with tank fabrication, erection, inspection, and repair.
How long does a tank lining last?
A properly applied field epoxy lining typically lasts 10 to 20 years, depending on surface preparation, service conditions, and maintenance. Factory-applied systems on bolted tanks can last longer; glass-fused-to-steel coatings can exceed 40 years.
Do potable water tanks need a special coating?
Yes. Interior linings in contact with drinking water must be certified to NSF/ANSI 61, and they must be applied and cured according to the manufacturer’s certified procedure before the tank is filled.
Can you reline a tank that is leaking or corroded?
Often, yes. We inspect the tank, repair or replace damaged steel, and then apply a new lining. If the steel is too far gone, we will tell you and quote a repair or replacement instead.
Do you coat tanks you did not build?
Yes. We coat, reline, and repair existing tanks from any manufacturer.
